Gary Shirley on Life as a Single Dad: “I Got a Little Depressed”

Amber Portwood wasn't able to show-face on Teen Mom's reunion special, but not fear, y'all. Her kale chip-eating ex-fiance/sperminator, Gary Shirley, was there to represent. Gary's had it rough since Amber's addiction to opiates spiraled out of control, and now that she's in jail he's had to be a full-time Papa Bear to Baby Leah.

"It's been a year plus since I've had her with me all the time," Gary told his biffle, Dr. Drew. "Amber hasn't stepped up as a mother for a long time. It kills me, I mean, I'm a full-time dad. I got a little bit depressed lately. I stay up late." We know, Gary. We've seen the tweets.

Luckily, Gary is determined for Leah to have a good relationship with Amber, despite his own issues.

"I have full custody of her, it'll probably stay like that. It's just better for everyone," he explained. "Amber can see Leah whenever she wants. I want my daughter to have a relationship with her mother, because sometimes I am curious about what my life would have been like with my father around."

Gary claims that rehab didn't help Amber (in fact, he says it was "like a resort"), but she was doing pretty well at the time the reunion was filmed.

"Here in the last week she's been very nice," Gary says. Meanwhile, Little Leah is going to daycare, where her teachers are impressed by her smarts. "She's a very smart baby, she got a lot from her father, I'll tell you that now," Gary joked.

As far as we're concerned, Gary's acoustic guitar lessons are the only education this girl needs.
