America's Next Top Model

ANTM Winner CariDee English: Modeling Industry Doesn’t Take Us Seriously

America's Next Top Model alum Jael Strauss was just featured on Dr. Phil for meth addiction. Blogger Rich Juzwiak wrote about it for Gawker and his story included a surprise extended note in the comments section from ANTM Cycle 7 winner CariDee English. Her thoughtful assessment gives insight on what happens after the show, which is currently in its 19th season, and takes The Powers That Be to task for not further guiding their “Top Models” when the cameras stop.

Here are highlights from CariDee’s comment/essay:

No help from ANTM after show: CariDee says that models don’t get help from ANTM after the show is over. “Tyra [Banks] won't do anything [for Jael]. She provided a wonderful platform for girls to have a chance at their dream, but, after there is no ‘Tyra Mail’.” She also laments all the criticism the winners get from the “industry” for not being big enough stars and supermodels.

ANTM girls aren’t taken seriously by industry: “Mentally, it’s horrific,” CariDee says, of the reception she got from the fashion and modeling industry after ANTM.” She also has some production notes for Tyra and crew: “I am sure the show lost its credibility in producing a top model somewhere btwn making 3 cycles a year and posing on roller coasters.”

ANTM models need guidance: CariDee claims that, after the show, mocking the title of the show itself. She wonders what context the term “top model” adheres to, since she didn’t find it accurate when looking for gigs. “Even though we just were named ‘TOP’ our place in line at Fashion World was at the bottom,” CariDee says. “The industry many times didn't care about our name, but did turn a snobby cheek to the name ANTM.”

Read her full comment for more. What do you think? We know there are a lot of ANTM success stories out there, with models going on to book fashion shows, commercials and even major films. But do you think ANTM should do more to support the contestants in the real world — especially the winners?
