Emmys 2012 Outstanding Reality Competition Program: The Voice Is Going to Win This Year
For the past 10 years, reality competition shows have been the backbone of American television. We’ve watched with baited breath as regular, everyday hopefuls battle for the chance to win their 15 seconds (or, occasionally, lifetime) of fame.
And though this year’s nominees for the 2012 Emmys are mostly made up of seasoned shows like Project Runway and Top Chef, one newcomer leads the pack for this year’s award.
The Voice has become one of NBC’s biggest hits. Currently in its third season, the reality music competition has impressed audiences around the world with its inventive structure and hilarious judges.
Here are just a few of the many, many reasons this show should win the Emmy this year.
The Voice was the only music-based reality competition show to be nominated for this year’s award. And after beating American Idol in the ratings war last spring, we’re not entirely surprised. American Idol was in its 11th season and the producers definitely tossed a wider net when they signed on judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez.
With the all of the hype and speculation around who will be sitting at the judges’ table, who has time to focus on the talent of the contestants?
The Voice isn’t afraid to mix things up when it comes to show structure. When NBC executives saw a drop in ratings following the show’s "blind auditions," they decided to change up the format in the “battle rounds.” Coaches can now “steal” contestants who don’t make it through the battling duets to be on their team. Talk about competition!
We appreciate that The Voice is constantly striving to improve their format and make the viewing experience better for all of America.
With the competing shows having between 9 and 20 seasons each, it’s no wonder The Voice was selected. The show brings a fresh face to reality TV and offers up more appeal than shows with declining ratings and formats that have overstayed their welcomes.
