Once Upon a Time

Once Upon a Time Season 2 Spoiler Roundup: What Will Happen to Emma?

Emma Swan (Jennifer Morrison) may be the most important character so far on Once Upon a Time, especially in light of the Season 1 finale (Season 1, Episode 22: “A Land Without Magic”), when she broke The Evil Queen’s (Lana Parrilla) curse by retrieving the true love potion from Maleficent’s dragon belly (with Charming’s sword!)

So what do we know about Emma’s upcoming story in Season 2?

Not-so-happy Charmings: Jennifer Morrison has said that Emma “didn’t anticipate how much resentment she’d have for [her parents] giving her up.” So expect the first scenes featuring Emma, Mary Margaret (Ginnifer Goodwin), and David (Josh Dallas) in Storybrooke to be fraught with angry tension.

Mommy Dearest. We don’t know the circumstances yet, but Emma and Mary Margaret will be forced to bond after a Lost-like situation traps them together. Could they be stuck in an alternate world separate from both Storybrooke and Fairytale Land? Or will they simply get stuck underground the way Desmond Hume was on The Island?

There will be an Emma-centric episode. On September 10, Jennifer tweeted, “About to start the most intense Emma episode yet! "So much will be revealed. Very exciting! [executive producers Edward Kitsis] and [Adam Horowitz] are geniuses!" Since we know that the cast and crew are currently getting ready to film Season 2, Episode 7, we have our fingers crossed that Emma’s episode will be right after Captain Hook’s episode (Season 2, Episode 4).

Remember the Ugly Duckling. In an interview, Jennifer said that, if Emma has a counterpart character in the world of fairy tales, she would tell fans to think of the Ugly Duckling ... for now. “Swans are some sort of unity between divinity and humanity, which is a great fit for Emma,” she says. This theory plays with the idea that Emma is the only link between the Fairytale Land and Storybrooke.

Will Emma have magic? When TV Guide asked co-creator Edward Kitsis if Emma will have magic in the new season, he said, “That's an excellent question. I would respond with a question. The question is: Can anyone learn magic or does it have to be something inside you?” We have a feeling the answer to that is “Both.” Magic is something you obtain, like money, but depending on who you are, you can probably use it in very different ways.

The Huntsman will be back (sort of). Jennifer says that, since The Huntsman (Jamie Dornan) was in the season finale, “they’ve established in Fairytale Land you can still flash back to him existing there, even though he’s not alive in reality.” But Jennifer also allowed that it might be possible for both The Huntsman and Pinocchio/August Booth (Eion Bailey) to come back to life in Storybrooke, now that there’s magic.

New love interest. Since Jennifer says that Season 1 was all about Emma falling in love with Henry, she revealed that the writers and producers are finally “going to explore the idea of her allowing romantic love in her life as well because that’s something she’s never really permitted previously either.” We have three suspects so far: Pinocchio, The Huntsman, and maybe even The Mad Hatter (Sebastian Stan). Or, perhaps, she’ll meet someone new!

Who would you like to see Emma with in Season 2? We can’t wait!

Once Upon a Time Season 2 premieres on September 30, 2012 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
