Once Upon a Time Spoilers: Why Does Emma Confront Dr. Whale in the Premiere? (PHOTO)

The first sneak peek photos of the Once Upon a Time Season 2 premiere (Season 2, Episode 1: “Broken”) were released today, and they leave us with more questions than answers.

For instance, why does Dr. Whale (David Anders) seem to be arguing with both Emma (Jennifer Morrison) (here) and David/Prince Charming (Josh Dallas) (here)?

Based on this photo, it seems clear that these photos are related to the spoiler about a crowd mobbing Regina's (Lana Parrilla) house. It looks like Dr. Whale might be at the head of that mob; he certainly seems to angrily get up in Regina's face in this photo (Regina still looks cool and collected, of course).

Meanwhile, here we see Regina looking at her hands, aghast, while Dr. Whale laughs. Magic is coming to Storybrooke, but it's possible that Regina hasn't learned how to use it in this world yet.

If that's the case, then our theory, based on the photos of Emma and David standing against Dr. Whale — as well as this photo of David and Mary Margaret/Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin) standing on Regina's patio — is that the Family Charming is trying to protect Regina from mob violence.

After all, while the Charmings have more reason than anyone to hate Regina, they are also the kind of people who support justice — and a crowd attacking a helpless woman is not justice. Furthermore, Regina is still Henry's (Jared Gilmore) adoptive mother, and we doubt they'd want him to see the woman who raised him being attacked (and he's definitely on the scene). Maybe Henry's the one who convinces them to protect her...

Do you agree with our theory, or do you have a different take? And why do you think the mysterious Dr. Whale plays such a big part in this scene? Does it give you any more ideas about his identity? Share your thoughts in the comments!

Once Upon a Time Season 2 premieres on September 30, 2012 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
