The Voice Season 3: Is 16 Contestants Per Team Too Many?

With the extended premiere week of The Voice behind us, we’re more excited than ever for the fresh crop of talent hitting the stage this season. But did you know that even after this additional night, coach Cee Lo Green needs to add 12 contestants to complete his team of 16? And the other coaches have between 9 and 11 empty spots remaining on their teams.

This season, NBC executives decided to expand the teams from 12 to 16, and though we always love to meet new faces, these additions might be a bit of overkill.

Since The Voice returns to only Monday and Tuesday nights next week, it’s going to take even longer for our favorite celebrity judges to fill up their teams. And the increased contestant pool means that when it comes time for the battle rounds, each team will have eight battles.

We’d love to argue that more contestants, auditions, and battles are a good thing, but there are negative aspects to this change. One big complaint that critics of the show constantly cite is the inability of audiences to really connect with the competition’s singers.

On shows like American Idol, viewers spend weeks with the 10 contestants or less, but on The Voice, the talent pool remains fairly large all the way up to the four-person finale. This doesn’t allow for the intimate connections found on other shows.

Each performer is given less camera time and in turn, less of a chance to prove themselves to America. It seems like these additional contestants will only make things more complicated for those not entirely familiar with the show or its ever-changing format.

What do you think? Should the teams have less than 16 contestants or is it the perfect number? Tell us below!
