Alexander Skarsgard Opens Up About His Parents’ Divorce

Although Alexander Skarsgard plays a powerful viking vampire god on True Blood, in real life, he showcases a softer side akin to amnesiac Eric Northman.

Five years ago, Alex’s parents — famed Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgard and his wife, My Skarsgard — divorced after 35 years of marriage. As the oldest of eight children in his family, he couldn’t relate closely to young Maisie in his new film, What Maisie Knew, but he did compare their experiences.

“My parents still hang out, are still best friends and still spend Christmas together. Dad likes to cook every night, so Mom will come over and have dinner with Dad and [new wife] Megan [Everett] and all the kids,” Alexander told The Los Angeles Times. “It’s much less dramatic than What Maisie Knew. It wouldn’t be a very good movie.”

Alex also took his family experiences to tackle his new role in Hidden, in which he plays Ray, whose family has lived in a bomb shelter for 301 days “since escaping a day of devastation that changed everything,” according to Orange TV.

He lost a shocking 16 pounds for this role, spending his days and nights filming in a “cement prison.” And while his thriller may seem like a total 180 from his role in What Maisie Knew, at the core, both are about struggling to keep a family together.

The Hidden synopsis continues below:

For 301 days, they have transformed their cement prison into a home, holding on to memories of the past and hope for a normal life someday. And for 301 days, the family has eluded what looms above the surface — the heavy breathing and booming footsteps that punctuate the night, threatening their fragile existence. All the while, the family has managed to stay hidden. Until now. Now their safe haven has been breached … and something is coming for them.”

Suffice it to say, after such an exhausting, grueling film, Alexander is ready to move onto something more lighthearted — and he even has two co-stars in mind!

“I need to find something with Danny McBride or Will Ferrell, something like that,” he said. “I need a comedy. I need something fun.”
