Once Upon a Time Season 2 Sneak Peek: Why Can’t Regina Use Magic in Storybrooke?

After seeing the chaotic spoiler photos from the Once Upon a Time Season 2 premiere (Season 2, Episode 1: “Broken”), we wondered how, exactly, Regina (Lana Parrilla) would fight back against the angry mob gathered outside her Storybrooke mansion. Now that magic has come to town, would she use it to protect herself?

Thanks to a sneak peek clip from Entertainment Weekly, now we have an answer.

In the sneak peek, we see Dr. Whale (David Anders) leading a large group of people towards Regina’s front door. As we knew from the photos, Dr. Whale, David (Josh Dallas), Mary Margaret (Ginnifer Goodwin), and Emma (Jennifer Morrison) would all confront Regina with their new memories of her torturous curse. But in the clip, Regina’s brazen attitude works against her for once.

Walking right out into the crowd, she raises her hands as if getting ready to cast a spell on the townspeople. But... nothing happens. They instinctively crouch in fear, but after realizing “she’s powerless,” they storm after her.

Why doesn’t Regina have magical capabilities? Obviously in Fairytale Land, the Evil Queen is skilled with using dark magic. Has Mr. Gold (Robert Carlyle) created a special kind of magic that excludes Regina? Hopefully, we’ll find out soon!

Once Upon a Time Season 2 premieres on September 30, 2012 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
