Do you think that Toby faked all of his strong feelings for Spencer the whole time?
As we’ve noted, PLL writer Bryan Holdman hinted, after the episode, that Spoby really does love each other. But if Toby really loves Spencer, how could he team up with the people who are trying to ruin her life and drive her so crazy that she may have screwed up her college plans?
Let’s start with the theory that Toby does love Spencer. Most of the evidence for Toby’s love is based on Keegan’s dreamy looks during his scenes with Troian, but also on the moments when Toby seemed to drop everything to do something noble for her.
Towards the end of Season 2, when Spencer had pushed Toby away so that “A” wouldn’t hurt him (ironic, right?), he reappeared in the finale (Season 2, Episode 25: “UnmAsked”) to proclaim his love for her, and to tell her that he’d spent his time trying to locate Dr. Sullivan (and succeeded).
In Season 3, Spencer wasn’t being completely upfront and honest about what was going on with “A,” so Toby disappeared for a few episodes. He finally came back in the summer finale, but it was only to have sex with her and then help Mona (Janel Parrish) with “A” team duties.
When all that is taken into consideration, Toby’s actions seem far more sinister. Those disappearances could have solely been for the sake of the “A” team. Who better to “locate” Dr. Sullivan than the person who kidnapped her in the first place?
But the theory that Toby has fallen in love with Spencer despite the “A” team is still a possibility. For example, on one of his expeditions to protect her, he could have discovered something about “A” that made him a liability. In return for his silence, the “A” team could have recruited him to carry out their dirty work, as long as he kept his relationship with Spencer alive. After all, Mona tried to recruit Spencer in the Season 2 finale.
What do you think? As sad as it may be, is it possible that Toby never loved Spencer at all? Troian has said that a “storm” is about to take place in Spencer’s life, and the devastation of a broken heart certainly qualifies. Or are you a diehard Spoby romantic? Tell us in the comments!
