TLC’s Breaking Amish Accused of Being Faked

TLC’s Breaking Amish is a reality show portraying Amish and Mennonite youths as they move to New York City to discover life outside their close-knit communities. However, some viewers are crying foul, saying that there’s little truth to the documentary-style show and alleging that some of the people TLC follows haven’t been Amish for years.

Cameras follow Rebecca, Jeremiah, Sabrina, Kate, and Abe as they shed their bonnets and dresses for jeans and t-shirts and trade gas lamps for electricity. In a clip, Rebecca is delighted as she flips the lights on and off in her New York City hotel room, but internet sleuths think the 20-year-old has been out in the English world for years. A photo on a Facebook page called Break Amish The Truth seems to show her and 22-year-old castmate Abe with a baby. According to the label, the picture is circa 2011.

While it’s unclear exactly when TLC filmed the reality show, more accusations from a former Amish blogger at state that Abe hasn’t been a member of the community for 14 years. Links to screenshots of a MySpacepage (which has since been taken down) has photos, supposedly of Abe, dating back as far back as 2007.

In addition, the Facebook page claims to have found records for Sabrina’s 2009 marriage and Abe’s 2011 divorce.

In a recent interview with Today, an executive producer for the show said that the five people they chose to follow had already decided to leave the community before they were chosen for the show.
