“You have to wonder,” Jennifer told TV Guide at the Creative Emmy Awards on September 15. “[My parents] really wanted to give up me for the greater good. Is the greater good really better than all of us being together? It's an interesting ethical dilemma."
Made even more interesting by the close friendship Emma has built with Mary Margaret (Ginnifer Goodwin), who she now knows is her mother, someone who she’s always thought of as an absentee mom who gave her up for adoption. Emma’s tough life as an orphan is a big part of her identity.
But at least the confusion makes for great dialogue. Jennifer teases one of Emma’s lines to Mary Margaret, coming up in Season 2. “I actually have a line in the show where I say, ‘All I’ve known for 28 years is that you gave me up.’”
How can anyone recover from a lifetime spent deeply resenting your parents, only to realize in an instant that one of them is your best (and only) friend?
