Glee’s “Britney 2.0” Spoofs Britney Spears’s Dark Days — But Did The Show Go Too Far?
Glee creator Ryan Murphy recently told The Hollywood Reporter that if Season 2’s original Britney Spears tribute was a love letter to the pop starlet, then Thursday’s new Season 4 tribute is “another type of love letter” to her.
Having seen the episode, we guess we could agree with that statement — if your idea of showing love to someone is shining a big spotlight on their very public breakdown, recreating what is perhaps their most humiliating stage performance, and poking fun at both their past wardrobe choices and their eating habits.
If Season 2’s “Britney/Brittany” centered around Britney the international pop star, then Season 4’s “Britney 2.0” was all about Britney The Hot Mess. We’re talking the head-shaving, umbrella-wielding Britney from back in 2007 — you know, before the recent comeback that’s landed her, among other things, a $15 million deal to judge The X Factor.
So, when Glee poked fun at her not-so-distant past, did the show go too far? We’re sure that Britney herself would not appreciate having her infamous VMAs performance of 2007 recreated in such detail.
But was it all in good fun? Brittany’s (Heather Morris) Glee breakdown was played for laughs as a humorous sort of hot mess, and the jokes never ventured into the territory of downright cruel. The show very well could have gone farther than it did.
Throughout the episode, various characters made sure to mention Britney’s recent triumph, and the starlet was praised for her ability to stage such a successful comeback and emerge victorious, even after hitting such low points in the past.
But, is this praise alone enough to make up for an entire episode of Cheeto-crunching and caffeine-induced crazy? We want to know what you think. Head below to sound off.
