Breaking Bad Finale Scoop! Anna Gunn Talks Skyler’s Descent and Endgame – Exclusive

Walter White’s journey from math teacher to hardened criminal is the main talking point of Breaking Bad, but his wife, Skyler (Anna Gunn), has undergone almost as dramatic a transformation.

Wetpaint Entertainment caught up with Anna at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Los Angeles TV Tea to talk about Skyler’s role in the show’s final run.

Wetpaint Entertainment: Do you foresee a sort of Bonnie and Clyde ending for Skyler and Walt?
Anna Gunn: Wow! I thought about that, and I wonder if that’s what’s in the works. I mean, I honestly have no idea. I can’t even predict it because they have always done things with the story that when you think it’s going to zig, it zags! Or when you think it’s going to come around this corner, it comes around that corner. I can’t predict, but I know it’s not going to be pretty. That’s what we all keep saying: it ain’t gonna be pretty!

Skyler seems to grow more and more resolved to the fact that her life is one of crime now, but also less and less happy. Could she ever be happy as a criminal?
You know, it’s interesting — we saw that little glimmer of hope at the end of [the first eight episodes of] Season 5 between she and Walt where there’s just a moment where they made eye contact. It gives me hope. I wonder if they will be able to sort of maybe rebuild what has been so damaged. I hope so, but I don’t know. So many things have broken down, and I don’t know if that can be rebuilt.

Could you ever see Skyler turning Walt in? Could he possibly go too far for her?
I don’t see that because I think she had the opportunity, and now she is [culpable] and she is in it so deeply. I don’t see that happening, but I don’t know. She may get to the point where she feels she has no choice. So I think that’s certainly a possibility.

Is it a bittersweet feeling going into shooting the last eight episodes?
It’s a good word: bittersweet. We know that the end is looming. [...] Bryan and I talked about it last night, and we just don’t even want to go there. He gave good advice, which is to savor all these moments and relish in all of these celebrations and certainly all of the work that we have left to do together. We have eight more [episodes]! We’re going to enjoy it as much as we can, and then when we get there, then we’ll have a good cry.

What do you do after a show like Breaking Bad?
I’m going to keep working. There’s some things in the works. [...] A momma’s gotta keep workin’!

More TV? Movies?
More TV... possibly some films. We’ve got a lot of things in the works being talked about. So yeah, it’s exciting!

The second half of Breaking Bad’s fifth season will premiere next summer.
