Demi Lovato and Katie Couric’s Shocking Common Struggles (VIDEO)
Demi Lovato and Katie Couric have a lot in common: both are role models for young women, both have new TV gigs, and — as we found out on Katie on September 24 — both have struggled with bulimia.
In Monday’s episode of the new syndicated talk show, the X Factor judge visited the show, which was focused around eating disorders in women of all ages. During the interview, Demi shared intimate details of her struggles, proving that she is one of the most honest and accessible celebrities in today’s spotlight.
Among the most shocking information she shared, Demi stated that she first started experiencing problems with her body at age three when she rubbed her hand over her stomach and wondered if it would ever be flat. Along the same vein, Demi also expressed her view that she was born with eating disorders.
It turns out, Katie can relate. The 55-year-old talk show host revealed that she, too, has struggled with eating disorders. "I wrestled with bulimia all through college and for two years after that," she says, adding, "I know this rigidity, this feeling that if you eat one thing that's wrong, you're full of self-loathing and then you punish yourself." The candid Couric went on to talk about how even when she would have a stick of gum that wasn’t sugarless, she would beat herself up.
Although Katie says “I kind of hesitated to even bring [her own eating disorder] up,” she emphasizes that one of the reasons she wanted to feature the topic on the show was because she had gone through it herself.
Also a topic of the interview, Demi divulged details about her time in inpatient psychiatric care, saying that she felt like she was in prison and was not allowed to eat or go to the restroom alone. Demi explained that one of the factors that contributed to her feelings about herself growing up was that she attended school with students who were naturally very thin, and so she stuck out as “bigger” (at age eight!) — especially since she was bullied by her classmates due to her size. This experience led to Demi’s current campaign to end bullying between girls.
During the show, viewers tweeted thanks to Demi for sharing her experience with the hashtag #StayStrong. It’s refreshing to see a famous face reveal such human struggles — and to engage her fans and the television audience in a productive discussion.
