Jessica Sanchez’s Mom Says Her Daughter Is Proud of Filipino Heritage

In response to recent criticism over the Philippines’s open-arm reception of Jessica Sanchez, her mother, Editha Sanchez, has spoken up to declare that the American Idol runner-up is very proud of her Filipino heritage.

Editha told ABS CBN News, “I'm Filipino, she's half Filipino, half Mexican. But she's closer to my family than she is with her dad's family. She's growing up in more of a Filipino culture than a Mexican culture. She's proud to be Filipino and I'm proud about that.”

Last week, Courtney Blooding, the manager of Filipino singer Charice (best known stateside for her role as Sunshine Corazon on Glee), said, “why do the Philippines claim Jessica Sanchez? Jessica was born [sic] an raised in the US. I don't THINK she speaks tagalong.” Courtney went on to say that she was “insulted” by the fact that the Philippines are claiming Jessica — “something that is made in the USA” — rather than some of their own homegrown talent.

Finding Courtney’s negative remarks “unfortunate,” Editha put a positive spin on the matter.

“It is a privilege [for Jessica] to be compared to Charice,” she said. “It is unfortunate that what's coming out is a little negative but it's awesome because we look up to Charice, we know about her. She's a great singer.”
