Grey’s Anatomy Season 9 Premiere Spoiler Roundup: Flashforward, a Doc Leaving, and More Possible Deaths

Summer's over, but we don't mind, because TV season is about to begin. And you know what that means: Grey's Anatomy Season 9 is almost here!

Our favorite medical drama premieres this Thursday, September 27. But for those of you who aren't willing to wait those few extra days, we've gathered all of the juiciest spoilers about the episode right here.

Read spoilers at your own risk! For more on Wetpaint Entertainment's philosophy on spoilers, click here.

A flashforward: If you're expecting to pick up in the woods where we left off in Season 8, think again. The premiere will flash forward several months (though Season 9, Episode 2: “Remember the Time” will flashback to right after the crash).

Who lives? We know Meredith (Ellen Pompeo), Derek (Patrick Dempsey), and Cristina (Sandra Oh) will definitely survive the crash. Eric Dane (Mark Sloan) is leaving the show after Season 9, Episode 2: “Remember the Time,” leading many fans to conclude he will die either in the premiere or in the second episode (depending on whether the second episode is entirely flashbacks, or if it contains some scenes in the present). A spoiler-y pic of Mark tweeted by Patrick Dempsey certainly makes it look like he's in bad shape.

As for Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) … well, Shonda has remained very tight-lipped about her fate. Jessica Capshaw has hinted that she'll be in very bad shape and has warned that fans won't be happy about what happens to her. However this pic of Arizona in Season 9, Episode 4: "I Saw Her Standing There," which Kevin McKidd (Owen Hunt) tweeted, suggests very strongly that she survives the first few episodes, though many worry about the state of her injured leg.

New Friendships: New BFF alert! Apparently Callie and Derek will bond over the aftermath of the crash. Plus, Callie (Sara Ramirez) will work on Derek's injured hand. As we see in this sneak peek of the premiere, that friendship will already be underway when the season begins.

We also know Derek and Owen will rekindle their bromance, though we're not sure how much of that we'll see in the premiere.

Derek's hand: Speaking of Derek's hand, we know that his story this season will involve him trying to figure out who he is if he's not able to operate at the same skill level he had before. The sneak peek of the premiere mentioned above shows him insisting that he's ready to operate again, and Callie agrees. We have a feeling all won't go as planned during that procedure...

Cristina gone? Apparently Mer decides to drop the job in Boston and stay in Seattle, and convinces most of the other docs to do the same. The one person she doesn't get through to is her BFF: Cristina. We're not positive we'll see Cristina at her new hospital in the premiere, but it seems like a good bet. And what does this mean for her relationship with Owen? While Shonda Rhimes has hinted that their relationship may eventually work out, she also says that it will be initially be "very unsettling."

Meredith's attitude: Apparently Mer will be angry and a bit of a hospital Nazi this season, though we're not sure how much of that we'll see in the premiere.

Alex's promiscuity: We're not sure how much of this we'll see in the premiere, but we know that near the beginning of the season Alex (Justin Chambers) will feel guilty that he wasn't on the plane (remember, Arizona took his spot at the last moment), and he'll deal with his emotions by sleeping around.

Guest Stars: Comedian Arriane Alexander will have an unknown guest role in the premiere that will involve interacting with Owen.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 9 will premiere on Thursday, September 27 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
