We did not see it coming. Neither did Drew. "I was shocked," he told E! News. "Honestly, it felt like someone punched me in the stomach. I was on Season 2 and I was never on the bottom two, fortunately, and I never wanna be there again."
"I think a lot of it has to do with a lot of people thinking, 'Oh, he won. They're in the middle, he's safe,” Drew speculated to E! “They're fine, he's got a great partner. She's got lots of fans, too.' And that's not the case. In this season, more than any season in the past, you have to vote for the people you want to stay, not just the ones you think might be going home."
Just goes to show you — even champions aren’t safe when they end up in the middle of the pack. Plus, Drew’s Foxtrot was just OK, not exactly the knockout some viewers may have expected from a champion, but also not “bad” enough to merit concern. Head judge Len Goodman said it was all a bit "hard and hectic" for him. Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba also said he got a little stiff and rigid at times. Yes, it was very sexually suggestive, but not suggestive of great dancing.
Also, Drew and Anna are still working on their connection. They don’t seem to have that instant must-watch spark that some new pairs just have naturally. (Can you work on something like chemistry or is it just there or not?)
On top of that, there was some last minute dance order change on Monday, and even though Drew was originally supposed to dance eighth on the premiere, he ended up dancing 10th. His voting number was still listed for #8 and that might’ve confused some people, since it didn’t correspond to his dance placement. Gilles Marini ended up dancing eighth with a voting number for 10th, but maybe Gilles had a high enough score that it didn’t effect him with voters.
It could be Drew and Anna’s fans just needed this wake-up call and they’ll sail through next week. Or maybe it’s a sign of things to come. We’ll find out next week.
