Breaking Down the Grey’s Anatomy Season 9 Premiere Sneak Peek: What Happens to Derek?

The Grey's Anatomy Powers That Be have really only offered one glimpse of tonight's Season 9 premiere (Season 9, Episode 1: "Going, Going, Gone"), in the form of this single sneak peek revolving around Callie (Sara Ramirez) and Derek (Patrick Dempsey).

However, while it's not a ton of information, this short clip — combined with some of the spoilers we know about the season — does tell us more than you might think. So let's take a close look at what we can learn.

First, watch the sneak peak, which, as per multiple spoilers about the episode, takes place several months after the plane crash from Season 8, Episode 24, "Flight."

Callie helped fix Derek's hand: This will presumably contribute to their growing friendship, which has been hinted at for this season.

Derek's hand is pretty functional: In the sneak peek we learn Callie has cleared Derek for surgery. That means his recovery is pretty darned good, given the situation.

But will he really be able to operate? In this sneak peek, we learn that Derek has not been in the OR since the crash. Based on the spoilers about Derek having to learn to live with potentially not being able to operate anymore, or not being able to operate at the same skill level he had been at, we're guessing that if Derek does make it into the OR tonight, it won't go well.

Callie seems cheerful. Okay, maybe we're just desperate to confirm that Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) does indeed live, but Callie seems awfully chipper for someone whose wife recently died. So we're going to take that as a good sign for Arizona.

What do you make of this sneak peek? Let us know in the comments below.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 9 will premiere on Thursday, September 27 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
