While both Latin pop singers are talented, they have distinctly different voices. And although they both have had many hit singles over almost two decades in the business, they don’t necessarily cater to the same crowds.
In fact, Christina has a slight edge over Shakira for breaking into the English language music world a few years sooner and winning four Grammy awards, but then again, they have released the same number of albums and both dabbled in Spanish-language songs.
And as a fun side note, they both appeared as musical guests on Saturday Night Live alongside Alec Baldwin. Coincidence or a sign?
Sassy pop star Christina is in a league of her own when it comes to her vocals. She has been compared to legendary singers like the late Whitney Houston, Etta James, Mariah Carey, and even Celine Dion! She’s a powerhouse soprano with incredible range, showcasing different tempos, octaves, and styles on each of her albums.
But Shakira is uniquely talented, too. Although she sings in a lower range, classified as a “contralto,” her albums have all been very different from one another. Many know her from her first single, “Whenever, Wherever,” but songs like “Hips Don’t Lie,” “She Wolf,” and the 2010 World Cup’s official song, “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)" also easily get stuck in our heads.
In comparison to Xtina’s dozens upon dozens of catchy, popular singles throughout the years, though, Shakira simply doesn’t stack up. Plus, Shakira has used a lot of electronic, auto-tuned sounds in her past few songs whereas Christina mostly relies on her natural voice within to carry her tunes.
