A Downton Abbey Prequel Is Coming! Who Should Play Young Robert and Cora?
Are you ready to see the original love story play out? Too bloody right you are!
When Downton Abbey Season 1 started, Robert, the Earl of Grantham (Hugh Bonneville), and Cora (Elizabeth McGovern), his American-born Countess of Grantham, were already married with grown children. But writer Julian Fellowes told The Daily Mail he's planning an origin story to share how Lord and Lady G slowly fell in love.
"I do have an idea of doing a prequel of the courtship between Robert and Cora," Julian said at the Bafta Screenwriting Lecture. "Cora was in love with him before they married but as we know he only fell in love with her about a year after they married."
This is delicious and has to happen right now. Who should play the younger roles?
Zap2it suggests Once Upon a Time's Ginnifer Goodwinas Cora. That's a great idea, no? They also offer up Michael Fassbender to play the Earl. We'll never turn down more Fassy-watching time, but — and we can't believe we're writing this — isn't he too sexy for the part? Robert is a handsome, classy gentleman, but Fassy is a total sex god. Cora probably didn't fall for Robert because of his pin-up looks. Or do you think she did?
What about someone like Hugh Dancy (aka Mr. Claire Danes) for Robert? He's handsome without being too romance novel dreamy, and looks like he could be a decent young Hugh Bonneville.
