Grey’s Anatomy Spoilers: Jackson and Karev Will [SPOILER] Fast

Despite losing Mark (Eric Dane) on the Grey's Anatomy Season 9 premiere (Season 9, Episode 1: "Going, Going, Gone"), Jackson (Jesse Williams) and Alex (Justin Chambers) both had the opportunity to stand out. According to Jesse, we can expect a lot more of that as the season progresses.

“We certainly have big shoes to fill,” Jesse tells CNN, sounding almost exactly like his character in the premiere. As Mark lay in a coma, Jackson had a one-sided conversation with him in which he assured Dr. Sloan that he could make his own decisions in the plastics department from now on.

But Jackson won’t be the only one stepping up. “Hopefully we’ll see [Alex] and Avery go from boys to men, handle more adult material, situations, emotions.” He continued, “We're no longer students, we're no longer residents, now we're attendings. We're teachers instead of students. Hopefully we'll see that transition; I look forward to that."

We definitely saw signs of Alex’s maturity last night, even if it meant a thoroughly immature first half. After Alex tried to sleep with as many interns as possible before shipping off to Johns Hopkins, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) knocked some sense into him at the Seattle airport. He realized he couldn’t leave the pediatrics department in the hands of someone with such an opposite vision to his mentor Arizona’s (Jessica Capshaw).

As for Jackson, we might not have to wait too long to see evidence of him growing up. With April’s (Sarah Drew) surprise appearance at the end of the premiere, we're hoping to see those two can be mature enough around each other to either start a relationship, or remain best friends.

Catch the next new episode of Grey’s Anatomy on Thursday, October 4 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
