Once Upon a Time Burning Question: How Does Magic Work in Storybrooke?

Warning: This article contains spoilers for the OUAT Season 2 premiere. Turn back now if you don't want to be spoiled!

The Once Upon a Time Season 2 premiere (Season 2, Episode 1: “Broken”) made one thing very clear: Magic does not work in Storybrooke the way it does in Fairytale Land. But it doesn't clarify exactly how it does work.

Here's what we learn about magic in the episode.

It's not easy to use. Regina (Lana Parrilla) spends most of the episode attempting and totally failing to use her powers. The Blue Fairy (Keegan Connor Tracy) also says that she can't just up and use magic, either.

Is Emma the key? Regina is only able to make Jefferson's (Sebastian Stan) hat work when Emma (Jennifer Morrison) grabs her arm. Is Emma the key to restoring magic? We have a feeling it's not that simple, but we do know that after that initial touch, Regina seems to have her powers back, at least to some extent, since she is also about to attack David (Josh Dallas).

And what about Gold? It's unclear exactly how much control Mr. Gold/Rumplestiltskin (Robert Carlyle) has over his powers. He is able to summon the wraith, but we don't see him performing the casual acts of magic that were so common for him in Fairytale Land.

How do you think magic works in Storybrooke? Let us know in the comments below.
