What Happened to Fairytale Land After the Curse on Once Upon a Time?

Warning: This article contains spoilers for the OUAT Season 2 premiere. Turn back now if you don't want to be spoiled!

The Once Upon a Time Season 2 premiere (Season 2, Episode 1: “Broken”) answers a question that we've all been wondering: What happened to Fairytale Land after the curse?

We'd initially assumed that it was left as-is, except with all of the people missing. But as we learn from newbie Mulan (Jamie Chung), that's not quite the case. Here's what we can deduce from what she says.

Fairytale Land is not gone. Regina (Lana Parrilla) tells the Charmings that Fairytale Land is totally gone — disappeared, a void. And while it's hard to know when she's lying, it seems like she might really believe this. But she's wrong.

A land filled with horrors. According to Mulan, the Fairytale Land remains, but it is almost all empty of people, and "the land is ravaged with dangers more fearsome than you can imagine."

A corner preserved. However, Mulan explains that one "corner of the land was untouched. No one knows why." The people in this corner were frozen for 28 years; only recently were they released again (presumably around the time Emma [Jennifer Morrison] came to Storybrooke). The survivors have found a safe haven where Mulan and Sleeping Beauty (Sarah Bolger) are headed next.

So, why was one corner kept safe? We're wondering if this was actually Maleficent's doing. After all, she knew Regina's intentions, and even she thought the curse was beyond the pale. Perhaps she was attempting to protect one small part of the world. Or maybe we're totally off base!

Do you think Fairytale Land can ever be restored to what it was, or will it never recover from the aftermath of the curse? And why do you think one part of the world was saved? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
