Dancing With The Stars

Are the DWTS All-Stars Judges Already Playing Favorites? You Tell Us!

Listen to this critique from judge Len Goodman to Joey Fatone on the Dancing With the Stars All-Stars Season 15, Week 2: Performance Show. He said he wrote some notes while Joey was dancing his Quickstep with Kym Johnson: “Poor posture, bad footwork, lost body contact, frame wasn’t constant … but I really enjoyed it. It was so much fun. ... This is the secret, if you can’t dance much, come out and entertain us — and that’s what you came out and did.”

Um, thanks? Len is the king of the backhanded compliments, but that felt particularly harsh. People in the audience shook their heads and booed. Joey responded that he knows he can never be Len’s favorite. Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli also pointed out Joey’s dancing mistakes.

It was especially strange to hear since the score they gave him — 22.5 out of 30 — was the exact same score given to Emmitt Smith and Cheryl Burke and Drew Lachey and Anna Trebunskaya.

Drew got called out for not dancing his Jive on the balls of his feet, but his critique was positive when compared to the week before. Emmitt was complimented for being smooth, but Carrie Ann told him the speedskater (Apolo) and race car driver (Helio) did better than him this week. Meanwhile, Kirstie Alley and Maksim Chmerkovskiy got almost nothing but compliments for their Jive. Len said it was neat and precise and there was a lot of recognizable Jive in it. Bruno said Kirstie played the character beautifully. Carrie Ann said her one suggestion is she’d love to see them match their movement styles a bit more. But after all that, they got a 21 out of 30, which was a point and a half less than the others who were more harshly criticized.

Granted, Emmitt and Drew are past champions, but Kirstie was a runner-up, just the same as Joey, so why were they so kind to her and so harsh with him?

Do you think the judges were unfair this week?
