The Voice’s Chevonne on Announcing Her Eating Disorder on National Television: “It Was Very Scary”
Last night on The Voice Season 3, we were introduced to a former backup singer, Chevonne, who had gone so far as to tour with Lady Gaga on her Monster Ball Tour. The spunky redhead had a memorable afro and positive personality to boot.
But after her blind audition, Cee Lo Green noticed something deeper in Chevonne’s sound.
“There was something painful in your voice. What’s that about?" Cee Lo asked.
“Growing up I had major eating issues,” Chevonne responded, visibly nervous. “I had eating disorder issues. I’ve been very insecure, and I’ve been way too hard on myself. I want to tell the story now that I’ve lived it.”
“That’s what I heard in your voice, and it’s not always obvious to everyone, but yours was obvious to me. It hit a sweet spot within me,” Cee Lo responded.
Chevonne’s story inspired us so much that we asked her about it when Wetpaint Entertainment caught up with the singer today.
“I talked about it with friends and family and people I trust,” she said. “But to talk about it on that stage, in front of all those people in the audience, and now the world who’ve seen me on TV, not to mention the four coaches. It was very scary to go there, even just to open the door to begin to discuss that issue."
“I didn’t go into a lot of detail, but it was a very very sad time in my life. I did not believe in myself. I was not strong. I was very scared. I was very very sick. And I felt like I could never get better. I did eventually find strength in myself. I got better. Everyday is a fight. I want to show people that you don’t have to let it beat you. Even if it’s still in you, you can live your life and be happy and reach your dreams. That sickness is not strong enough to beat you.”
This backup singer’s story is definitely inspiring, but does she have what it takes to step into the spotlight? Weigh in below!
