Gary Shirley Confesses: “I Haven’t Been Able to Tell Leah Her Mommy’s in Jail”

Amber Portwood's story continues to pull on our heartstrings as new details about her 5-year sentence at Indiana's Rockville Correctional Facility emerge.

In a new interview with In Touch (October 15 edition), the troubled Teen Mom star's ex-boyfriend and baby daddy Gary Shirley reveals that he has not taken their 3-year-old daughter Leah to visit her mom in jail. Even worse? Gary has yet to tell his little girl that Amber isn't coming home! What gives?

"I haven't been able to say to, 'Mommy's in jail,'" Gary revealed. "When I tried to tell her … she got upset. So I've said, 'Mommy's at work,' or 'Mommy's on vacation.'"

According to In Touch, experts say that lying to a child about her mother's whereabouts could have negative consequences.

So what is Gary waiting for? According to the 25-year-old stay-at-home dad, the facility's paperwork is too daunting. But Rockville officials deny his claim, telling In Touch that all he would need is a government-issued ID and a birth certificate for baby Leah in order for her to see her mom.

Meanwhile, Amber has been struggling to understand why Gary and Leah haven't visited. "I try to give him excuses," she reveals. "In my head I say, 'Maybe he just can't handle it' or 'Maybe he doesn't want Leah to cry.'"

What do you guys think? Is Gary doing the right thing by trying to shield Leah, or should he allow her to visit her mom behind bars? Tell us below, and don't forget to tune in to Amber's Behind Bars special on Oct. 9 at 10 p.m. ET on MTV.
