The Voice Season 3’s Kayla Nevarez on Her Father and Poor Living Conditions: “It Just Gets Progressively Worse”

In Monday night’s final blind audition episode of The Voice Season 3, we were introduced to 17-year-old Kayla Nevarez who sang a soulful rendition of Estelle’s “American Boy.”

Though her performance inspired three judges to turn around, it was her story that really tugged at our heartstrings.

“My dad can’t make it here today because he’s really sick,” she said in Monday night’s episode. “He got diagnosed with liver disease, so he’s kind of going through that right now. He used to be so strong and now he’s, like, the weakest person in the world.”

Because of her father’s disease, Kayla’s family has been struggling with finances. All seven of them have been forced to live in a two-bedroom apartment with Kayla sleeping on the couch and her brothers on the floor.

So when Wetpaint Entertainment caught up with the talented youngster, we checked in to see how her family was doing.

“It doesn’t really get better,” she said of her father’s condition. “It just kind of gets progressively worse. But we’re all there for him and we’re helping him through.”

And for now, the Nevarez family remains in the same small apartment. But her brothers have been pitching in with her mother’s work load, and they have hopes of moving into a bigger, better space when the lease is up.

For now, her focus is on the upcoming battle rounds. Hopefully she’ll get to enjoy the NBC-comped hotel rooms during the live shows, provided she’s bests her battle round competitor.
