Christian Siriano on Opening His Store, His Fall Must-Haves, and Staying BFF With Heidi Klum – Exclusive
Out of all the Project Runway winners, none have attained the celebrity — or the success — of Christian Siriano. So it makes perfect sense that he’s the first to open his very own shop in the heart of New York City’s ultra-hot Nolita neighborhood. But fame hasn’t changed Christian one bit: He’s still the guy to talk to when it comes to of-the-moment style. Wetpaint Entertainment recently caught up with the reality star turned successful designer. Wetpaint Entertainment: What does it mean to you to have your own store, in New York City of all places? Christian Siriano: It is one of the most exciting accomplishments in my life. It has been a dream for a long time to have my own retail space in New York and I'm excited to be able to really give my customer’s exciting new product each season. Who is the Christian Siriano customer? There are so many types of women who shop my brand each season, which is why I wanted the items at my new store to represent and reflect different price points and styles. We have everything from knit tops under $100 for the young working girl to bags and accessories under $150, as well as cocktail dresses and evening gowns that show on the runway. What’s influencing you these days? For the autumn season, I was influenced and inspired by the film The Vampire Bat, so the idea of flight and movement was developed into the collection. I loved the idea of adding cape overlays in chiffon and silk crepe to represent that inspiration in dresses, jackets and tops. What are your fall must-haves for women? A great leather jacket in black or white, print oxford blouse, an A-line skirt, classic black blazer in tweed fabric, and a flirty circle dress in black or a print. What does it mean to you that Heidi Klum still wears your designs and supports your label? Heidi is such a wonderful person with such an amazing heart. When she took the time to come to my store opening a few weeks ago, I couldn't have said “thank you” enough. I love seeing her in my clothing because she is a perfect muse. She loves fashion and takes risks with what she wears, which is any designer’s dream.
