Glee Season 4: Did Finn Push Rachel To Break Up With Him?
We don’t know about you, but in our minds, Rachel (Lea Michele) and Finn (Cory Monteith) have always been a really special couple. In the beginning, they were so far apart socially, it seemed like a miracle when they not only realized they really liked each other but were able to bridge thegap between their worlds.
So, when Rachel was poised to move to New York, we just hoped that they would once again be able to happily straddle the distance. After all, Finn has always known that Rachel would move to New York after graduation. At first, he made it his own dream and even worked to get into the whole “Inside the Actors Studio” thing. But after he got rejected, we still didn’t see that their love would end too. It was a surprise then, that instead of getting married, Finn put Rachel on a train to New York, announcing he was “setting her free.”
Not to be blunt, but F that! And then, to make it worse, Finn didn’t write. He didn’t call. He didn’t even make an effort to exist in Rachel’s world once she got to NYADA. He was supposed to be in the Army, but when that didn’t work out, did he move to New York? Nope. He just showed up announced — which would have been romantic, except for the way he acted.
First, he spent the night in the loft and didn’t even talk to her, didn’t touch her, and (as Rachel tells Kurt), the two just lay in bed in silence. Then, when he accompanied her to her classes, he sat in the background, brooding (or, rather, singing Duncan Sheik... whatever). At Callbacks, Rachel wanted to sing a romantic duet to Demi Lovato’s “Give Your Heart a Break,” but Finn refused, pushing her to sing it with Brody — even though he was suspicious of Rachel’s chemistry with him.
So, when he asked her in the park about what happened and she told him the truth, we hoped that they would be able to work through it. Yes, Rachel kissed Brody. But all she did upon Finn’s arrival was try and get close to him. Instead of talking, Finn left in the middle of the night.
What do you think — is Finn to blame for the breakup? Did he push Rachel away? Let us know your perspective in the comments below.
