Once Upon a Time Burning Question: Who Is Dr. Whale?
At this point, we know the Fairytale Land identities of most of the prominent Storybrooke townsfolk we've met — except, of course, the mysterious Dr. Whale (David Anders). We're supposed to find out who he is in Once Upon a TimeSeason 2, but until then, all we can do is speculate. And speculate we shall!
First, let's think about what we know about Dr. Whale: He's a doctor in Storybrooke; he works with Regina (Lana Parrilla) (and looks to be getting close with her in Season 2, though it's hard to tell if the confrontation is romantic or angry); he's a bit of a womanizer, though the type to send flowers after a one night stand, as we saw with Mary Margaret (Ginnifer Goodwin); and, most intriguingly of all, he looked freaked out and upset after the curse broke and he regained his memories. It seems like either his fairy tale self really doesn't like who Dr. Whale is, or vice versa.
With that in mind, here are three theories about who he could be.
Peter Pan: This is our favorite theory at the moment. We know Captain Hook is coming this season, so clearly the Peter Pan universe exists in OUAT's world. And what could be more horrifying for the boy who never wants to grow up to realize that he's suddenly a womanizer with an important, difficult job? This might also explain why there was a shot of the Blue Fairy holding him after the curse was broken — could she be a twist on Tinker Bell?
Price Eric: We're going to meet Ariel in Season 2, which means she'll need her prince. This would explain the "whale" reference, since Eric like to sail. If the show goes with the happy Disney version of the story and character, perhaps he's upset after regaining his memory because he realizes he's been sleeping around and acting for Regina instead of staying faithful to his True Love (Ariel). On the other hand, the show could also tap into the darker original fairy tale, where Eric does not marry Ariel — in that case, perhaps he's overwhelmed by the memory/realization that he missed out on his True Love (a situation that would be rectified in the end, we're sure).
Robin Hood: We're not really sure why he'd end up a doctor, be we could see this anti-establishment hero being very upset at himself for winding up in league with Regina. Perhaps that behind-the-scenes photo of him getting up in her face is an angry confrontation.
Dr. Frankenstein: Bear with us here, but we think it's possible that Dr. Whale could be Dr. Frankenstein. Find out why here.
Of course, there's always the theory that's he's actually Monstro, the whale in Pinocchio. But that seems far too literal to be true.
