We learn in flashbacks that Regina’s mother Cora had learned magic from Rumplestiltskin (Robert Carlyle) before Regina was born. She’d been given a book of magic spells, which she slept with under her pillow. The spells involved dark magic, of course, since they were given to her by Rumple. And when Regina found herself without any magical capabilities in Storybrooke, she knew exactly where to find that book.
She went to Mr. Gold’s shop, and he eventually summoned the book of spells. Under her rotting apple tree, she opens to a random page, and the magic rises up off the page. After thoroughly breathing it in, her eyes flashed violet for a moment, her black apples returned to their healthy shade of red, and Regina had gotten her powers back.
Instead of using it onHenry Mills (Jared Gilmore), she used it to threaten everyone in Storybrooke. Henry did the only thing he could: gave himself up to her, so she would stop slinging fire at the whole town. Are there limits to Regina’s Storybrooke power? And does Gold, like Rumplestiltskin, ultimately control Regina and her magic, having given it to her in the first place?
