Once Upon a Time

Once Upon a Time Season 2: Why Don’t Mulan and Sleeping Beauty Recognize Snow White?

On Once Upon a Time Season 2, Episode 1: “Broken, Emma (Jennifer Morrison) and Mary Margaret/Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin) were accidentally sucked into Fairytale Land, where they were discovered by Mulan (Jamie Chung) and Sleeping Beauty (Sarah Bolger). However, the two newbies didn't exactly take to our heroines, as we saw in Season 2, Episode 2: “We Are Both.” They tied Snow and Emma up, dragged them back to Mulan's "safe haven," and threw them in a pit with Cora (Barbara Hershey).

Writer Jane Espenson took to Twitter to answer fan questions during the airing of "We Are Both," and cleared this one up.

"Why doesn't Prince Philip or Mulan know who Snow White is?" a fan asked.

"They weren't from the same neighborhood," Jane replied.

This makes sense to us. Fairytale Land is vast, with multiple kingdoms. And it's not like they have TV or the internet there — if someone wasn't from around Snow White's kingdom, there's no real reason they should know what she looks like, or even much about her.

Of course, that doesn't explain why Mulan and Sleeping Beauty apparently didn't let Snow and Emma explain themselves before treating them roughly. But they've been through a lot, so we'll give them the benefit of the doubt — even if we don't approve of anyone tying up our favorite fierce mother-daughter duo.

Catch the next new episode of Once Upon a Time on Sunday, October 14 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
