Writer Slams Fifty Shades of Grey Screenwriter Choice, Fans Slam Back

Oh, Bret Easton Ellis. Sometimes you care too much.

Author/screenwriter Bret (American Psycho) has been very vocal about Fifty Shades of Grey — tweeting that he'd love to write the screenplay, and sharing many opinions about casting choices, from Ryan Gosling to Ian Somerhalder. (Ian was in The Rules of Attraction film based on Bret's novel.)

So there had to be some jealousy involved in his Twitter reaction to the news that Fifty Shades had hired a screenwriter for the first film: Terra Nova writer Kelly Marcel.

“Kelly Marcel?!?” Bret tweeted. “KELLY MARCEL?!? Kelly Marcel is WRITING the script for ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’?!? THIS is the movie they want to make? ARGH. … Kelly Marcel: the creator of (gulp) ‘Terra Nova’ and a Mary Poppins bio-pic has been blessed by EL James and no one can stop her. Dear God.”

Just before tweeting his frustration, Bret shared a link to a new trailer for The Canyons, a film he wrote starring Lindsay Lohan and James Deen. Some fans mentioned The Canyons trailer in their tweet responses, as if it showed Bret is really one to talk. Others tweeted disappointment that he would show so little “class” in calling out a fellow writer. And some people, like this guy, went for humor: “Don't be sad. Maybe they'll ask you to do the gardening-themed sequel, 50 Sheds of Grey.” Ha!

Do you care about the screenwriter choice or are you more concerned about which actors will be cast?
