Why Was Amber Portwood Sentenced to Five Years in Prison?
Tonight, Teen Mom star Amber Portwood will sit down with Dr. Drew for an on-the-record interview about her life behind bars at the Rockville Correctional Facility in Indiana.
If you don't follow Teen Mom news as religiously as we do (in which case we ask, what are you doing with your life?!), you may not have even realized Amber was in jail. The troubled mother of 3-year-old Leah received a 5-year sentence this past June after she failed to complete a drug rehab program — a requirement stemming from her earlier arrests for drug possession and parole violations in December 2011.
However, what's interesting to note is that Amber voluntarily elected jail time instead of completing her treatment.
According to sources close to Amber, the Teen Mom starlet is making major progress. Not only has she dropped about 25 pounds, but she's also enrolled in parenting classes and sings with the prison choir.
"I went to jail because I had an addiction to opiates," she said in a recent statement. "You live and you learn. And that's real. It's time for me to stop partying and realize that even though I'm 21, I'm not a normal 21-year-old — I'm a mother. Which means I have to grow up quicker and start acting like a mother."
Unfortunately, Amber hasn't been able to see her daughter Leah since she entered jail. Her ex-boyfriend and baby daddy Gary Shirley told In Touch that he can't bring himself to tell their daughter the truth about Amber's whereabouts, which we'll hear more about in tonight's interview.
Don't miss Amber's jailhouse update tonight, Oct. 9 at 10 p.m. ET on MTV.
