DWTS All-Stars: Was Shawn and Derek’s Quickstep the Best Routine of All Time?

Judge Bruno Tonioli called Shawn Johnson and Derek Hough’s All-Stars Quickstep one of the best dances he’s seen in 15 seasons of Dancing With the Starsand all the seasons he’s judged the original U.K. show across the pond. Carrie Ann Inaba added, “That was by far the best dance we have ever seen on Dancing With the Stars.” Len Goodman found it fantastic, but added that last week they dropped a point to Bristol Palin for breaking hold during her Quickstep and in fairness they had to dock points from this routine for also breaking some rules.

But not all the judges really went by that. Carrie Ann gave the dance a 9, implying she would’ve given it a 10 if she didn’t have to “slam” them for rule-breaking. Len went for an 8. Bruno gave them a 9.5, which was barely a tap on the wrist. So even though they praised it as the best dance in DWTS history, they still “only” gave it a 26.5, putting it third on the judges’ Week 3 leaderboard after the tied top score of 27.

Fan reaction to the Quickstep was largely positive. We posted a video of the routine which got more than 700 “likes” and comments like “Best dance I have ever seen with Shawn and Derek!” and “I love how even the band/orchestra was looking after them at the end! Very entertaining every moment!” But not everyone was charmed. As one viewer passionately noted in all-caps, “COME ON PEOPLE. NOT A DANCE AT ALL. IT WAS A GYMNASTIC COMPETITION AND BELONGS ON THE FLOOR OF A GYM. NOT FAIR AT ALL TO THE OTHER CONTESTANTS.” Another viewer responded, “I have to agree, that was NOT a Quickstep dance! They should have been disqualified!”

Where do you stand on the dance? Best routine of all time? Best dance of the season? Great, but maybe not the best? OK, but overrated? Not even a real Quickstep — more like a Freestyle?
