When we first saw Kelly Monaco andValentin Chmerkovskiy in the lineup of stars at the start of the Week 4 Performance Show, we noticed they looked … different. Serious and intense, and not goofing around like the other couples. Later, during a teaser, they held each other and looked lost in their own romantic, sexy world.
They knew what they were doing — preparing themselves, and the audience, for their emotional Contemporary routine, which closed the show.
"We talked about it before tonight, we said why don't be build up the character from the very beginning?" Val told On the Red Carpet. "It would be pretty silly to be laughing and smiling and everybody's clapping all the time and everybody, you know, exaggerates this cheese — and I thought that we gotta stay honest from the very beginning, so that when it's time to perform we're in that zone."
It worked! They got the third highest score of the night. And for what it’s worth, head judge Len Goodman gave them the same 9.5 he gave leaderboard toppers Gilles Marini and Shawn Johnson. Doing their interviews after the show, Team Vally kind of kept the character up, with Kelly rubbing her hand up and down Val's open white shirt, then holding him around the waist.
Hmm. Is life imitating art or are they going for a DWTS Oscar?
