New Study Calls Egg Yolks Just as Unhealthy as Cigarettes! Will You Give Them Up?

Most of us mommies barely have energy to make ourselves breakfast after we've gotten the kiddos out the door, which is where our trusty friend the incredible edible egg comes in. Eggs are a quick and easy way to get protein and energy, and they lend themselves to so many tasty dishes! Well, get ready for your frittata-themed dreams to be crushed, ladies.

A recent study in the journal Atherosclerosis (via the Los Angeles Times) shows that eggs thicken arteries in adults over the age of 40 almost as much as smoking does. Luckily, it's just pesky cholesterol-ridden egg yolks that are the culprit. In fact, according to the study, the more yolks you eat per year (including in baked goods!), the more likely you are to have a "mini-stroke." Sounds ominous!

You can head here for comprehensive details about the study, but the consensus? It's "imperative to reassess the role of egg yolks, and dietary cholesterol in general, as a risk factor for coronary heart disease," as the authors of the study noted.

The National Heart Blood and Lung institute recommends that Americans limit their egg intake to four yolks per week, and this latest news might inspire us to cut them out completely. What do you think, will you monitor your egg yolks?

Will you give up or limit your egg yolk consumption?
