Texting While Parenting: A Dangerous Idea?

Everyone knows that texting while driving is dangerous, but did you know that texting while parenting can also be dangerous — to your children?

The Bump recently reported on the Wall Street Journal's article, "The Perils of Texting While Parenting," which suggests that being distracted by a handheld device could result in more injuries for your toddler. How? Distracted parents means more time for curious little ones to find their way into accident-prone situations — everything from hot stoves to monkey bars.

Looking at the facts released from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it certainly does seem suspect that from 2007 to 2010 — the years that smartphones became increasingly popular — "nonfatal injuries to children under age five rose 12 percent ... despite a decline in the years before 2007." Between product recalls and padded playgrounds, childhood should be safer than ever from accidents, right? So does that mean cell phones are to blame?

Then again, we are talking about miniature human beings here who are just learning how to walk and use common sense. We're pretty sure toddlers were accidentally hurting themselves long before even Zack Morris whipped out his giant portable phone.

Still, more research needs to be done, but it's certainly an eyebrow-raiser, and a good reason to put down your phone — however retro-tastic it might be!
