As much as we’d like to think the higher cost is due to our impulse buying all those fashion magazines and miracle skin-care products, it’s actually recent environmental changes that’s inflating some of the food costs. Now the things we love (apples, popcorn, and — good grief — wine) are noticeably more expensive.

If you want: Wine While it may be hard to swallow, it’s true that rising temps in California have the potential to stomp out half of the state’s wine production within the next 30 years. Basically, start hoarding merlot now. Try instead: Beer. As grape farmers and winemakers adjust prices to make up for the loss in production, scoop up a six pack of your local brewery’s brew. Or, stick to the lighter, lower cal, lower carb versions.

Try instead: Locally grown, bagged popcorn. Not only is it greener and healthier to eat popcorn that’s been grown locally and bagged without artificial butter flavors, it will also cost much less! Season yours with garlic salt, cayenne pepper, or even curry powder for a tasty, low-calorie alternative to butter.
