Who Is Dr. Whale on Once Upon a Time? New Details on the Most Mysterious Character

The Dr. Whale (David Anders) mystery will finally be revealed in just six days, when Once Upon a Time Season 2, Episode 5: “The Doctor” airs on October 28. We’ve gone through all the theories, promos, and speculation, and we think we have a good idea of who he really was in Fairytale Land. Let’s see if you agree!

Let’s start with the most popular current theory, especially after fans saw the preview for “The Doctor:” Is Dr. Whale Frankenstein? The promo has only added fuel to this dark and supernatural fire, because Whale is seen back in Fairytale Land, wearing all white and examining Regina’s (Lana Parrilla) deceased True Love Daniel (Noah Bean) on a gurney. With a flash of lightning, Whale appears to use a human heart to give life to Daniel’s dead body.

In Storybrooke, however, we think Regina is so upset because Dr. Whale has used a human heart to give life to Daniel’s body again. Either this heart is no good, or Daniel is just furious with Regina for becoming so evil, but whatever Dr. Whale’s done with him is not good news for Regina.

In the Canadian preview, Mary Margaret (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Emma (Jennifer Morrison) discover that someone has stolen the hearts of a whole crowd of people who fought in the ogre wars. We actually suspect that this was Cora (Barbara Hershey) and Captain Hook (Colin O’Donoghue), who will surely try to manipulate them into getting what they want: a way to Storybrooke.

Back to Whale. We’ve gone through many cryptic clues and details which point to Dr. Frankenstein, including hints from the OUAT Facebook game online, and the fact that the 1931 film Frankenstein was directed by James Whale. So the Whale Is Frankenstein theories are solid.

Still, we know that Captain Hook will be around for a while, and that means Peter Pan has to make his way onto the scene. Could Dr. Whale’s cluelessness about women be a sign that he’s still the boy who never wanted to grow up? Who found a home in Neverland? It would also explain why Whale was in the Blue Fairy’s arms when the magic cloud lifted. A possible nod to Tinkerbell?

Then there was that odd reference to a monstrous sea creature in Season 2, Episode 3: “Lady of the Lake”, when Fairytale Land’s forest-dwellers were on the hunt for a villain named Leviathan, which means sea monster or whale. Could this Leviathan be Dr. Whale? And if so, could he have been the one who drained the lake?
