She previewed her sentiments in her Ladies’ Home Journal blog, which was posted shortly before Apolo’s “Guilty Pleasures” themed Samba to to “Give It to Me Baby.”
As Carrie Ann wrote, “I think Apolo and Karina need to turn it up a notch tonight and add more difficulty into their choreography. I don’t think Apolo is being physically or mentally challenged enough with Karina’s choreography and he’s such an amazing athlete. Sure, he’s sexy, but you can’t play that card in every routine, especially when he’s got such incredible talents outside of that. Look at Shawn Johnson’s routines — she uses every trick she possibly can to make her routines better and she’s pushing her limits all the time. That’s what is exciting and Apolo should have that same approach. He’s got to pull out the big guns from here on out if he wants a breakthrough. He’s the only one of our celebrities left (besides Kirstie) who hasn’t been on the top of the leaderboard yet.”
Yikes! And she was not impressed by Apolo’s Samba. She said Apolo’s leg work was fantastic and the way he used the floor was amazing, but “Something is not quite right.” Apolo is a shining star but he still hasn’t had his breakthrough dance. He’s not where he should be, she said, adding that Apolo and Karina need to work on their chemistry and teamwork. Len Goodman was confused by that comment. “It’s like I’m in the home for the bewildered here, I can’t believe that.” He thought the dance was terrific. There was a bit too much thrusting for his taste, but it was terrific.
Len gave the dance a 9.5, which is the same score he gave leaderboard toppers Sabrina Bryan and Louis van Amstel. Carrie Ann gave the dance an 8.5. Bruno Tonioli split the difference with a 9. Which judge is right, in your opinion? Do you think Karina isn’t pushing Apolo enough? Do you think they are terrific? Or do you think it’s somewhere in between?
