On Monday, DWTS will go country. (Guess they are skipping the Halloween theme this year.) There will also be some kind of country group dance in addition to the usual individual routines. They did a group Country Western dance back on Season 6 and it was pretty hilarious, so maybe we should expect something else like that.
All the scores from Week 5 will be added to whatever happens on Monday, October 29, and then one couple will scoot out the door on Tuesday, October 30. Most of the couples talked to On the Red Carpet about their Country Week plans after this past Monday’s Performance Show. Here’s what they said, plus some other news picked up from Twitter.
Emmitt Smith &Cheryl Burke, Foxtrot Emmitt and Cheryl don't seem to be huge country fans, but at least Emmitt was familiar with the song they got. "He actually really loves our song," Cheryl said. She didn't even know it. The only country song Cheryl knows is "Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)" from her Season 2 Freestyle with Drew Lachey.
Emmitt is a Dallas Cowboys legend and he teased some "Texas style" coming to the ballroom. Maybe he'll be Cheryl's new cowboy.
Melissa Rycroft &Tony Dovolani, Viennese Waltz Melissa says "fixin'" and "y'all," so she's kinda country. She's also from Dallas and used to be a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader. Tony, on the other hand, has no country game. Melissa told On the Red Carpet when she asked him to show her his country moves, he whipped out some Gangnam Style. So he’s been fired. "I'll take this one over, Tony," she joked. "I got this week."
Watch their video here. They don't talk about their dance style, but on Wednesday Melissa tweeted, "Not gonna lie, little sore this morning :-/. Thankfully we have Viennese Waltz. Slowing it way down this week :-)"
Apolo Ohno&Karina Smirnoff, Viennese Waltz Karina did her OTRC interview solo, after Monday's show. She said Apolo had been struggling with a stomach bug. It's a shame there was no interview with them on Tuesday so they could respond together to Carrie Ann's opinion that something is missing in this partnership.
Anyway, Karina was full steam ahead with big Country Week plans that could actually provide the breakthrough dance Carrie Ann wants.
"Apolo is not really into country as much as I am," Karina said. "I actually love country, believe it or not. When I found out that we had Country Week, I knew exactly what I wanted to do. It's one of my favorite bands of all time. They're tremendous. The lyrics, the melody. We're dancing the Viennese Waltz and it's going to be the most emotional dance that we have yet to do on the show. It's Breast Cancer Awareness Month and it's going to be connected to the family members that I lost and the family members that he lost to cancer."
She said she'll be shocked if she's not sobbing through the emotional dance.
Kelly Monaco &Valentin Chmerkovskiy, Tango Kelly disagreed with the judges' scores this week. She and Val were put at the bottom of the board for their Samba. Every week will be a tough work week, with her time on General Hospital, and she doesn't think it affected her performance at all. But whatever. Val said the judges are third in line on the groups to please, after each other and the audience.
Next is country music. Are they country fans?
Kelly: "No. It's probably furthest away from my comfortable zone. Yeah, so, thanks a lot."
Val: [cutting her off, looking straight into the camera]: "We love country music! And everybody that loves country music we love you even more than country music itself!"
Ha! Even Val is confused about how he became the politically correct one.
Kelly: "It's not in my top 10 playlist, that's for sure. [...] We have to do a Tango to Carrie Underwood. So, yeah, I'm a little worried."
Val said this week's "guilty pleasure" song — to Cher Lloyd's "Want U Back" — was more his guilty pleasure song than hers, since that wasn't really in her genre either. What does Kelly listen to?
Gilles Marini&Peta Murgatroyd, Cha-Cha-Cha Gilles said there will be a group dance where everyone dances something country together. He said they would learn that dance Tuesday morning.
Will Gilles wear a cowboy hat and boots? "Yes, absolutely!" he said. Peta said no. Gilles clarified — he won't dress that way for their dance, just during the week. Ha! So at least Gilles seems to be embracing the theme.
Shawn Johnson &Derek Hough, Cha-Cha-Cha Shawn and Derek don't even mention Country Week in their video, they just preview their Rumba (which they would do the following night) and talk about how Shawn came up with choreography ideas for Team "Call Me Maybe." Watch their video here.
UPDATE: "According to @purederekhough, #TeamShawnough dance the Cha Cha Cha for country week & the country western group dance! ;-) #funtimes"
Sabrina Bryan &Louis van Amstel, Rumba Sabrina seems like the kind of positive person who loves everything, so it's no shock to hear she loves country music too.
"Like, love it love it," she told OTRC. Louis isn't familiar with their song, but he'll study it. It sounds like they actually have a serious song to an emotional theme, kind of like what Apolo and Karina are doing.
"This Rumba has got a story to it,” Sabrina said, “and a story that totally hit home with me, of just going through bad relationships and then eventually finding an amazing person. For me, so much of my life right now feels amazing on a lot of different levels. So it's going to be a really touching routine for me and I can't wait. I'm really nervous that my emotions might get the best of me."
She doesn't like to show that kind of stuff on TV, but Louis said she's going to do it next week!
Kirstie Alley &Maksim Chmerkovskiy, Rumba Kirstie said this wasn't just her worst week on DWTS, it was one of the worst weeks of her life. She hit a couple of walls and was "crying like a little bitch" over everything. She's an emotional person! And her dog was sick but the dog is okay now. Since it was Monday night, they also teased their upcoming "Gangnam Style" routine — and their preview moves are almost as good as the finished product. You have to watch.
What about Kirstie screams country? Nothing, Maks said. "But I'm all country." He joked that they'll do Eastern Bloc country. Maybe a nice little Ukrainian dance.
As usual, they're much too busy goofing around to provide serious information, but Kirstie tweeted, "Next week Rumba...my favorite... dreaming of being dreamy." Sounds good!
