Real Housewives of New York

Cindy Barshop on the New Jill Zarin and RHONY Drama: “I Back Jill” — Exclusive

Cindy Barshop was let go from Real Housewives of New York at the same time as Jill Zarin, so naturally she has some thoughts about all the recent Jill-Andy Cohen drama. Wetpaint Entertainment recently caught up with Cindy at the SuperTrash Flagship Store Opening in New York City to talk about Jill, RHONY, and her now-infamous feather and fur merkins.

Wetpaint Entertainment: You’ve gotten a lot of attention for your “vajazzling,” with the Foxy and Carnivale especially. Do you think the buzz about it makes it a bigger trend or will make your company more successful?

Cindy Barshop: You know what? It really is such a trend, Swarovski crystals. I’ve been doing this for 10 years and this was a big hit: the vajazzle and Foxy bikini. So I’m really happy. I’m actually opening a new store on Fifth Avenue; we’re just re-doing the brand. I just flew in from Chicago. We’re looking at brands of CVS right now, so I’m thrilled. It’s great!

Would you ever want to go back to RHONY? I know it’s a crazy environment, but it could help you launch more and gain more notoriety with Completely Bare. Is that something you’d consider, if they asked you?

I think Bravo’s an amazing brand and I’d love to work with them again, but not on the Housewives. As amazing as it was for me, it’s kind of not my style; I’m a little bit more downtown New York. But cheers to them! Bravo did an amazing job. I’m still watching — I’m a fan still! It’s just easier not to be in it, but I’m glad that I did it.

Have you been keeping up with what’s happening with Jill and all the drama surrounding her? What’s your take on the situation?

I have to tell you, I back Jill; I’m backing Jill. I spoke to her the other night. You know, one of the things is that she’s one of the first few [stars] who built the [RHONY] brand, so it’s different when she goes off versus when I go off the show. So I get that, I get it! She built that. Housewives is a major brand, and let me tell you — she built it! So if you’re a part of it, it’s different than you coming in and kind of riding on the coattails of everybody else’s success. I don’t mind saying it! I was lucky. So I understand where she’s coming from.

If they ever offered you a spin-off, would you take it? What would it be about?

Completely Bare! My line of spas.

Would you bring in any of your former Housewives or do you have new friends you’d want to bring on?

I have my old friends, my assisting friends, and Jill’s always been my friend, so that would be the group that would be on it.

You said you just opened a new store. What’s the next step for the business?

We’re going to be opening up some … I’m not allowed to say! Within the next three months, I will let you know, though.

You said you’ve still been watching. What do you think of the new Housewives?

I actually think they did a great job! They did a great job! Everybody said it was slow in the beginning, but that’s because we didn’t know them. I think it had to be done. I’m coming from an outside view and it’s not the same for me, but I really think they’re doing a great job and hat’s off to them! It’s a really hard thing to do, to really put yourself on display like that.
