S.H.I.E.L.D. is an ABC pilot based on the crime-fighting task force first conceived by comic book legends Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. The division most recently appeared in The Avengers as the agency that united the titular team of superheros.
Ming-Na will play Agent Melinda May, whom The Hollywood Reporter describes as a “top-notch pilot, weapons expert, and soldier” who is “soulful but damaged by her time spent in combat.”
Clark Gregg has also been cast in the project as Agent Phil Coulson, reprising his role from multiple Marvel movies. (But no word yet on if the television series will feature Samuel L. Jackson and How I Met Your Mother’s Cobie Smulders, who also portrayed S.H.I.E.L.D. members!)
The Avengers director Joss Whedon — known to fans of the Whedonverse as the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly, and Dollhouse — will co-write the pilot with his brother and his brother’s wife, Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen.
Joss will most likely direct this project, assuming he can squeeze it into his schedule, since he’s already booked to helm 2015’s Avengers sequel.
Ming-Na, 48, last appeared on TV in a starring role in Stargate Universe and a recurring role on Eureka. She’s also the voice of Mulan in the Disney movies.
We’re curious to know who else will be added into the mix. Avengers TV spin-off cast, assemble!
