Grey’s Anatomy Creator Shonda Rhimes Sells Sci-Fi Drama to ABC
For Grey's Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes, three is never enough. There’s always room for more shows in Shondaland.
We previously reported that Shonda recently sold three new shows to various network. Now, just because she can, Shonda is producing another very unexpected show.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Shonda will be teaming up with her producing partner Betsy Beers (Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice, Scandal) to produce (of all things) a sci-fi thriller for ABC. The power duo will join forces with writer David DiGilio (Eight Below), who is adapting Debra Driza’s upcoming book, Mila 2.0.
The book, which will be published in March, is about a woman who finds out that she is a MILA — a Mobile Intel Life-like Android. Basically, she is yet another government experiment in artificial intelligence. And her scientist mother kidnaps her when she finds out that she can experience human emotions. Could we finally see a robot cry?
Although Shonda doesn’t have a lot of sci-fi experience, we do love Seattle’s (or Minnesota’s) very own robot, Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh). Plus, Shonda is a sci-fi fan herself, so we have faith she can pull this off.
What do you think of the premise? Will it make for an entertaining television show? Do you like that Shonda is branching out?
Catch the next new episode of Grey’s Anatomy on Thursday, November 8 at 9 p.m. ET/PT onABC.
