Once Upon a Time Season 2, Episode 5: “The Doctor” Review: What Did You Think?

Once Upon a Time Season 2, Episode 5: “The Doctor” solved one of the show's ongoing mysteries: Who is Dr. Whale (David Anders)? But was the story worth the wait? Read on for Wetpaint Entertainment's review of the episode, and then tell us what you think!

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Once Upon a Time Season 2, Episode 5: “The Doctor.” Turn back now if you haven't seen it and wish to remain spoiler free.

We thought this episode was great.

The main Storybrooke plot revolved around Whale, who's really Dr. Victor Frankenstein, bringing Daniel (Noah Bean) back from the dead in an attempt to get Regina (Lana Parrilla) to send him back to his world. It was an emotional story about Regina finally letting go of Daniel. Perhaps now she can really learn to find happiness without him.

The backstory portion of the episode was also good. We learned that Rumplestiltskin (Robert Carlyle), with Jefferson's (Sebastian Stan) help, used Frankenstein to push Regina to the dark side. Frankenstein, in return for a heart to take back to his world so he could bring his own brother back from the dead, pretended to try to bring Daniel back; after he "failed," Regina became convinced there was no hope, and finally gave in to her anger. We're interested in why Jefferson was helping Rumple! Hopefully we'll get more info soon.

Meanwhile, in current Fairytale Land, Emma (Jennifer Morrison), Mary Margaret/Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin), Mulan (Jamie Chung), and Sleeping Beauty (Sarah Bolger) found Captain Hook (Colin O’Donoghue) was the only survivor of a huge massacre by Cora (Barbara Hershey) on their safe haven. He claimed to be an innocent and lucky villager, but Emma wasn't buying it. He eventually told them the truth, and offered to help them, leading them to the location of a magic compass they need to get back to Storybrooke. The catch? It's up a giant beanstalk. Cue next week.
