And Now For Some Good News! 3 Heartwarming Stories of Babies Born During Hurricane Sandy

Need a little heartswell after this harrowing week of Hurricane Sandy coverage? We’ve rounded up stories of three moms who welcomed their bundles of joy during while all hell broke loose around them. Almost makes our own hours of labor delightful by comparison — well, almost.

The Brave Mom: Julia Alemany of Greenpoint, Brooklyn
What Happened (reported by NY Daily News): Poor Julia. After going into labor she received an epidural in a pitch black room, administered by the light of a flashlight and two cell phones. Then, she escaped down 8 flights of stairs, after which she was driven to a different hospital in an ambulance that was struck by a falling tree!
The Happy Ending: Micah Alemany-Markus was born at 12:48 a.m, healthy and weighing 7 pounds, 15 ounces.

The Brave Mom: Christine Schleppy of Skillman, New Jersey
What Happened (from ABC News): At only 35 weeks along, this mother of three was surprised to find her contractions coming fast and strong Monday night. Once an ambulance made it to her home, it became stuck in mud and debris — and so the laboring mom had to be rescued by a fire truck! Finally, she arrived safely to a makeshift birthing center set up in a cargo bed of a tractor trailer, where staff were ready to help with her delivery.
The Happy Ending: Little 5-pound, 2-ounces Liam Alexander Schlepp arrived happy and healthy amid the storm.

The Brave Mom: Lauren Smith of Bridgeville, Delaware
What Happened (story via Cape Gazette): This young mother went into labor just as the storm started to ramp up on the Delaware coast in the early morning hours. Even though there was a closer hospital, she and her husband drove through the intense rain and wind, very low on gas, miles away to the hospital where she knew her own doc would be. By dawn, they arrived to an eerily empty hospital — but staff were there to assist.
The Happy Ending: By sunset Aria Smith, a healthy 7-pound, 15-ounce baby girl, was born!
