The Vampire Diaries Top 7 OMG Moments From Season 4, Episode 4, “The Five”

We love those moments on The Vampire Diaries that make us gasp, pause, and rewind — and Season 4, Episode 4, “The Five” is chock full of them. Here are the scenes that left our jaws agape.

7. We get a Cliffs Notes history of The Five
The year was 1110. The Original siblings had been terrorizing Italy when they stumbled across the first slayers — not that The Five were very subtle about their chosen profession. The brotherhood even went as far as to put on a show in the town square. Klaus (Joseph Morgan), Elijah (Daniel Gillies), and Rebekah (Claire Holt) were in attendance at one such event. Dressed in their finest Middle Ages gear, they watched as slayer Alex stood in a circle of four staked vampire and warned humans of the bloodsuckers’ evil ways. “These demons live among you, passing as human,” he said. “Witness with your own eyes.” He opened a box. A man stepped out then burst into flames.

6. Elena probably prevents a date rape
After watching a fraternity bro roofie an unsuspecting co-ed’s drink, Elena (Nina Dobrev) compelled him to keep his mouth shut. “You’re not going to make a sound,” she said. Then she went for his jugular. The would-be date rapist stared blankly off into space — aware but unable to protest — as she drank her fill and almost killed him. Vengeance was hers. For the moment.

5. Rebekah gets lovestruck
Just as the Original sister was about to, well, consummate her relationship with her secret fiancé, Alexander had other things in mind. “Let us not talk of such evil,” Alex said when Beks’s nosy questions got to be too much. “Let us just do this.” He kissed her. “And this.” He touched her tenderly. “And this…” For the last blow, the hunter jabbed a white oak ash-dipped dagger into his betrothed’s heart. Poor Bekah. She just had to go and fall in love with a vampire slayer.

4. Elena and Damon Party Hard
And by “party” we mean dine and dash their way around the dance floor. Taking advantage of the low lights, macabre Halloween costumes, and Calvin Harris’ thumping hit “Feel So Close to You,” Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena brazenly fed off half the party goers, getting high off the under-aged drinkers’ blood and neglecting to wipe their mouths. After Damon bit a woman dressed like an Amazon and Elena nipped a sip from girl dressed as a ‘80s doll, the pair ended up dirty dancing with each other. And they did so blissfully — until Bonnie (Kat Graham) walked into the room, crushing their buzz.

3. Stefan betrays Rebekah
Again we say poor Original sister. After Stefan poured his heart out about Elena, Beks opened up to him, telling her ex-boyfriend (they dated in the Roaring ‘20s, remember?) that she’d buried the love of her life with his sword in the San Vittore in Brienno churchyard, where they’d planned to get married. Less than three seconds after the words came out of Rebekah’s mouth, Klaus stepped out of the shadows with a white ash-dipped dagger in his hand. “You really are a hopeless fool,” he told his little sister. Beks tried to vamp away. But Stefan blocked her exit. “I’m sorry, Rebekah, he said. But then the Nice Guy Salvatore stepped back and watched as Klaus killed his sister again, making us wonder if his was really a heartfelt apology.

2. We discover the truth about Professor Shane
At the end of The Five, Connor (Todd Williams) killed a hybrid and fled Mystic Falls. He ran for his life straight to the office of… Professor Shane. “Why the hell did you send me there?” Connor asked. Good, question indeed. We knew something was up with Professor Creepy, as Damon called him. Why else would a respected PhD rent an office upstairs from a raucous fraternity? Not to mention The Five’s symbol that was hanging next to his desk...

1. Turns out, there’s a cure
Rebekah lets Stefan in on a little secret about The Five: their secret weapon that will put an end to all vampirism? It’s a cure. Stefan wants in, at least for Elena’s sake. He sees his girl slipping towards the edge, and he’ll do anything to keep her from going over.
