The Voice Season 1 Winner Javier Colon Dishes on Adam Levine, Simon Cowell, and Being a Father (EXCLUSIVE)

It’s never easy for a winner to relinquish their crown, but The Voice Season 1’s Javier Colon does it with grace.

After handing over the title of “The Voice” to Season 2 winner Jermaine Paul, Javier has only just begun his career. His post-Voice album, Come Through For You, didn’t quite deliver in the way he’d imagined, but that hasn’t stopped the singer.

“It wasn’t probably what everyone had expected it to be, but one thing I know from being in this business from before The Voice is that this is not a sprint, it’s a marathon,” Javier told Wetpaint Entertainment. “As long as there’s forward progress, that’s my main goal.”

And there’s definitely been some motion in his career lately. Javier just finished playing some shows with Maroon 5 and his former coach Adam Levine, and has plans for further collaboration.

“They are the hottest band on the planet,” Javier gushed. “And Adam, he’s been just a great supporter during the show and after the show.”

While Javier benefited from Adam on the show, he (along with the rest of America) noticed the feud between Adam and Christina heating up in Season 2.

“There definitely seemed to be some drama,” Javier admitted. “I can’t speak for Adam, and what his feelings were. It just seemed like Christina didn’t like Tony [Lucca]’s performances very much or maybe she had something against him or against Adam. I haven’t spoken to Adam about his feelings toward her, but I really don’t think he harbors any ill will.”

Javier has also noticed the catty remarks from former American Idol judge and X Factor creator Simon Cowell, who has publicly stated that The Voice is a copy of his competitions (but with spinning chairs).

Javier disagrees that The Voice is just another clone.

American Idol was obviously the first when it comes to music competitions. There’s no question about that, but The Voice is very unique,” Javier said. “The chairs that turn — what he may think is a gimmick — is actually one of the best things that I love about the show because the coaches can’t see the people who are singing, and they have to base their decisions solely on what they hear.”

But Javier doesn’t harbor any resentment toward Simon.

“He can say all he wants, and I’m sure he’ll continue to say that his show is better, but the bottom line is there’s room for all of the shows,” Javier said.

In addition to playing with Maroon 5, Javier will also toured with recent Dancing With the Stars contestant Gavin DeGraw and singer Colbie Caillat.

And Javier hopes to one day reach out to international fans of The Voice.

“I’m looking to get to Australia and Singapore and a lot of places in South Africa and try to connect with fans that are a little further away, but fans none the less,” Javier said.

The family man admits that touring is tough on his wife and two young daughters (ages two and four), but they are big supporters of his job.

“My oldest will walk around and she’ll tell people, ‘My daddy won The Voice,’” Javier laughed. “But she doesn’t think that my job is any different than anyone else’s Dad’s job, and I want to keep it that way. We’re a normal family, and I just happen to have an awesome job that I love.”

While Javier says his daughters love music and singing, he doesn’t necessarily want them to go into the entertainment industry.

“When I asked my oldest daughter almost two years ago what she wanted to be when she grew up, she said ‘I just want to be happy,’” Javier said proudly. “For a two and a half year old, that was an amazing answer, and I want to keep it that way.”
