Cody Belew Talks Beating Avery Wilson on The Voice Season 3: “It Never Even Registered to Me That Avery Was the Favorite to Win”
As we prepare for tonight’s live shows on The VoiceSeason 3, we took a moment to reflect on last week’s shocking and action-packed knockout rounds.
One of the show’s biggest upsets was Team Cee Lo’s Cody Belew— the country singer who eliminated fan-favorite Avery Wilson from the competition with his touching rendition of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene.”
Wetpaint Entertainment caught up with the feisty singer last week after his win, and he readily admitted that he had no idea his knockout performance would be so controversial.
“I was so focused on the task at hand that it never even registered to me that Avery was the favorite to win,” Cody admitted. “I felt like everybody on our team was equally matched. But I also knew that I had brought “Jolene’”out at the right time. Avery had already shown himself to be a powerful singer. Because of the songs that I had done prior, I had not had that opportunity yet.”
And shine he did. Cody’s emotional performance gave coach Cee Lo an incredibly tough decision. But even as they were awaiting the results, Cody felt confident.
“Even after we finished, Adam Levine said, ‘I thought this was going to be a bloodbath,’ and I was shocked,” Cody admitted. “I never considered it that way, to be that unbalanced. I love Avery to death, but I also loved singing ‘Jolene,’ and I needed that moment to happen.”
